We have so many good memories together from laughter, to having mud fights, to adventuring through the woods, to worshiping God together with our whole hearts, and just downright loving each other. It was extremely hard leaving these girls knowing that I wont see them for who knows how long which broke my heart but I knew i was always going to have a special place in their heart and they would always have a special place in mine. I was so deeply impacted by this event in the way that I was able make lifelong friendships I knew I was never going to lose and I was taught so much beyond what my brain can sometimes fathom. Ive learned just about how to love someone and give them your heart to take care of them despite they may not give that back, also to be 100% honest with my friends and open about my life because thats what is going to make a true friendship, and to just live life in the moment and to not hold anything back. God has a big say in my life which is why I decided to get baptized almost 2 years ago to prove to myself and others that I was going to dedicate my life to God and God only. On october 22nd, 2013 I was baptized in the ocean of the Del Mar beach, and that was the most wonderful and best day of my life. .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 , .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .postImageUrl , .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 , .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2:hover , .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2:visited , .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2:active { border:0!important; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2:active , .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2 .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .ufb3c6879632b6d6c9b843574fe6a2de2:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Ryan DeMattia EssayIt started out as an idea that I just wanted to know God and build a relationship with Him in 8th grade so I decided to study the bible in order to achieve some of those things. I had studied the bible for 3 years which actually is a very long time when some people get baptized after 2 weeks of studying the bible but that was because I had so much to grow in for my character and to just learn about. It was a long and difficult process but I knew it was leading me to make one of the best decisions in my life that I could make. Once I got to the end point of studying the bible, I came to the spot where me and the people I was studying with believed I was ready to get baptized and to become a disciple of God and Jesus. The information was sent out to a bunch of friends and family that I wanted to get baptized, so then at 7pm everyone that wanted to come showed up at the beach. Everyone went around sharing about me, all positives. Once the sharing was finished the time had come where I had to go into the water and have a full immersion baptism. I cant even express how it felt going into the water and coming out so refreshed and could totally feel like a new person. I was so immensely impacted by this event because it changes my entire life and now I do nothing but everything for God. It has been 10 months since my good friend Kiilani passed away and each and everyday doesnt get better. On July 23rd last summer I was at dinner with my dad in Philadelphia at an italian restaurant. I was currently on a mission trip with my church and that was the one night my dad could visit me on his business trip. We were eating food, and I was enjoying a delicious heavenly margarita pizza that was to die for and I noticed had received a phone call from a good friend that was in Vegas who had been keeping in contact with me and updating me on how Kiilani was doing in the hospital. So I texted him asking â€Å"Whats up? † but he didnt reply and instead called me. That was the worst phone call of my life and the worst thing to ever hear from a friend was that â€Å"I just wanted to let you know that Kii passed away this afternoon†. Instantly I started balling and couldnt stop shaking. I didnt know how to process that one of my closest friends had just passed. Throughout the entire night my dad had taken me back to the camp and he had left to go back to his job, and it was non stop crying and shaking. I continued to feel sick to my gut and not understanding why this just happened. She was getting better, and now she had to be taken from me. It has been an extremely tough 10 months without her here or even just being able to text her or call her like we used to but I do know for certain that shes in a better place with God. My whole life changed because of this event and changed me as a person. If someone has shocking news or a surprised look on their face the first thought I have is oh no someone died. Im very sensitive to death and just the loss of someone and even watching the simple movies with knowing someone had died is hard for me. Especially going through the months of August-October I wasnt depressed but so close to that and I didnt even realize till February how big of a toll this death took on my heart and not closure or anything had been taken care of which made things all the more difficult for me emotionally and mentally. .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 , .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .postImageUrl , .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 , .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9:hover , .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9:visited , .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9:active { border:0!important; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9:active , .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9 .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .uea28ec6241f15219b3eacbe21d6a7ea9:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: The Impact of Globalisation on the Australian Econ EssayBut despite all of this and the aching in my heart theres so much I have learned from all of this. It has made me a more appreciative person for life and for the moments Im given with people, and to take advantage of everything that is put in front of my face. Also, that Gods timing is perfect and there is a reason why he took her. He was saving her from something devastating in the future that may have separated her from God, and that is wonderful to know and very calming for me to know where she is and the life she lived for God. Overall I know it may seem really tough and such a difficult situation to go through but it has made me a better person today. So the three main events in my life that have shaped me to who I am today are my mission trip to philadelphia with Girl Corps, my baptism, and the passing of my dear friend Kiilani. Through all these events you can see how the quote relates back to me on how I get my happiness by loving and serving people, and not from what the world may give my from life experiences and learning from and letting them shape you to who youre meant to be.

Beauty When the Other Dancer is the Self

Beauty When the Other Dancer is the Self Context of the Essay This essay focuses on an essay that was written by Alice Walker. The main aim of this essay therefore is to critically analyze the essay with the help of supporting evidences and apply the lessons learned on real life situation. Presentation With the help of her essay, Walker is able to write her own autobiography of her early years of life. She begins the essay by presenting her early years of life. The year is 1947 and she is two and a half years old. Her mother is busy preparing them for the county fair that her father only wants to take three of his eight children. This is because the car that he will use to take the children to the fair only has room for three. Therefore, the one who look best or impress their father will get the chance. It is therefore the work of Alices mother to prepare all the eight children for her husband to pick the three. As they line up, Alice says, â€Å"Take me DaddyI am the prettiest† (Walker 442). Being the last-born and the prettiest girl, Alice is chosen together with two other children. As she continues with her essay, Alice also states that she was a bright child in both academic and performing arts. In 1950, she is picked again to give the Easter speech. Unlike the other children who stammer or forget their lines, Alice is fluent and eloquent. She also dresses magnificently and looks beautiful. People therefore cannot help but comment that, â€Å"That girl is a little mess† (Walker 442). As she grows older, she gets to be a tomboy and dress on a cowboy outfit just like her brothers. The go to watch western films together and play cowboy games with his brothers. Here, they pretend as if they are cowboys who are hunting down Indian cattle rustlers. However, things took a different turn when Alice reached 8 years of age. First, her father buys his brothers BB guns. Since she is a girl, her father cannot buy a gun for her. She therefore had to stick with the bow and arrow. This reduces her ranks in their playing games from a cowboy to an Indian.Advertising Looking for essay on communications media? From the tone of her voice, it is evident that she is not happy with her new character in the games (Walker 443). This is as a result of gender equality where females h ave always been viewed as a weaker sex in the society. Alices fate then becomes worse when one of his brothers shoot him with his BB gun. She is shot on the eye and develops a serious injury. Her brothers come up with a lie to cover up the story of the real incident. However, her parents soon find out the truth and by the time that she is taken to the doctor (almost a week later), it is too late to save her eye. She had developed a glob of white scar tissue on the spot where she was shot by her brothers BB gun. In addition, the eye cannot see at all. She becomes even more terrified when she hears the doctor saying, â€Å"If one is blind, the other will likely become blind too† (Walker 443). The white globe and being blind on one eye seems to affect the character and self-esteem of Alice. All through her life, Alice had used her beauty to gain her happiness. It is due to the fact that she was pretty that she was chosen by her father to go to the fair. It is also due to her bea uty that she was the best student in class and recited the Easter Sunday speech at ease. Now that she only has one eye and a white globe, she cannot stare at people. She separates herself from her other siblings and children. This is because, whenever she wants to interact with them, they normally comment on her eye. This really hurts her feelings. To make the matters worse, they have to move into a new county. The school that she goes to was once a prison and had an electric chair; this affects her thoughts and gives her nightmares. She is however forced to go back to her old church school where other children still make fun of her. One of them calls her, â€Å"the one eyed bitch† (Walker 443). At school, she begins to perform poorly. It is only one teacher who understands her and treats her with respect. During this time, her mother becomes very ill and she is afraid that she might die. In addition, her cousin comes to visit but since she has a low self-esteem, she hides. D uring all this time, Alice keeps on asking her family members if she had changed. They always tell her that she has not changed (Walker 443).Advertising We will write a custom essay sample on Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More However, when she is 14 years old, the white globe is removed from her eye. She is therefore able to stare at people again. She becomes a bright student in class and manages to get the love of his dreams. Towards the end of her essay, it is evident that she is a successful woman in life. She is even able to see the beauty of the desert before she completely goes blind. Her main fear is that her daughter, Rebecca will recent her for her disability but to her surprise, she stares at her on night and tell her, â€Å"Mommy, there is a world in your eye† (Walker 443). At this point, she realises that she has been resenting herself for all the wrong reasons. She is howev er glad that her daughter is not embarrassed by her physical disability. Analysis and significance of the Essay This essay presents how a small factor occurrence can change the life of an individual. There are many people who have been living normal lives but as a result of an injury, sickness or accidents, their lives have changed and their dreams have been shattered. This comes about as a result of a change in their lifestyles, character, self-esteem and relationship with other individuals. Alices life changed once she got an injury on her eye. Her beauty, which was her advantage in life, was shattered. When she used to pray at night, she did not pray for sight but for beauty (Walker 443). This therefore shows how much she valued her beauty. The same theory applies to individuals who value a specific part of their life and lose it. A good example is Magic Johnson of the LA Lakers. He was diagnosed with the HIV virus at the peak of his career. As a result, he had a difficult time a ccepting this fact. This made him retire from professional basketball. However, when he accepted his status and publicly announced it, he gained public support. He came back to the game and was chosen as an All Star player in 1996. It is therefore essential to believe in yourself no matter what. Work Cited Walker, Alice. In Search of Our Mothers Gardens: Womanist Prose. Michigan: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1983. Print

Critical Thinking envi 423 2 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Critical Thinking envi 423 2 - Essay Example on the continent of Asia but has strong cultural and geographical ties with many parts of North Africa with aspects such as religion and language getting assimilated by them as a result. In ancient times the Middle East connected major trade routes between Asia and Europe through both land and seas. Caravans from India and China brought their goods to the busy markets of the Middle East for trading purposes. From there, the traders ferried the goods across the Mediterranean and into Europe to venture into other new markets. Other routes took traders across the red sea or down the coast of Africa with some traders penetrating further into the hinterlands. These bands of migrating people made up of traders and even conquerors, acted as agents of change in that they spread new and foreign ideas, religious traditions, inventions and different forms of achievements into the nations of Europe, Asia, and ultimately Africa. This movement of ideas, and or customs from one place to another con tributed to cultural diffusion (Arab Contributions to civilization). The Middle East is home to many different peoples with a variety of languages, religions and traditions. But Arabs whose major language is Arabic are the majority group in the Middle Eastern countries, but the Middle East is also home to other groups such as the Iranians, the Turks, and the Kurds. The major religions dominant in the region include Islam which is the leading religion by number of devout followers, followed by Christianity that also boosts of a substantial following, and lastly but not least Judaism. These are people who were born and raised in the desert or mountain wilderness and lived in tents or caves. They engaged in raising goats, sheep, donkeys, horses and camels. Bedouins consider the desert as their home, travelling in small bands or groups. Interestingly, the Bedouin are still living today as they have been living for thousands of years back, travelling from one oasis to another in their

Inviromental changes writing assigment 6 Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Inviromental changes writing assigment 6 - Essay Example of this is Saudi Arabia which is a nation which according to the CIA World Factbook (2010) has a total fertility rate of approximately 4 children born per woman. This is a relatively high ranking however it is also the case that the nation has a GDP per capita of approximately U.S. $20,300 which is relatively high, and when the non national labour force wage rates are removed it may be the case that the GDP per capita of nationals is much higher. However one could conclude that a great deal of this economic growth can be attributed to the large oil exports of the nation which is a significant source of revenue for the nation and its people. From another perspective one could argue that population growth negatively effects economic growth of less developed countries. In Diamond (2005) a case for how overpopulation has hindered the development of Haiti when compared to the relative economic and environmental success of its neighbor the Dominican Republic was presented. It is the case that according to the CIA World Factbook Haiti has a population that is approximately the same as the Dominican Republic but with less land and a population growth rate that is nearly double that of their neighbors to the East. With a growing population one of the most obvious concerns is the growing of food crops, in the past the nation would dedicate most of their arable land to the growing of coffee and sugar cane for sale in export markets now very little of this land is used in this regard and almost 100% is dedicated to feeding its growing population. This once viable source of revenue has now more or less dried up, and this once stabl e source of income for the government (Through taxes) has hurt the economic development of this nation. This issue is compounded for the government when the domestic population is paying less income from tax revenues. With lower revenues available for government spending one can expect a significant negative effect from brain drain as it would be

Pros of watching television The positive aspects of watching television include that you have something to talk to friends and relatives about. There are certain programs which are more popular than there and If you watch them you feel Included and that you have something In common with the people around you. Television can help to foster a sense of national identity, since a significant proportion of the population will be exposed to the same kinds of news programs and television shows, so that people feel that they belong to a wider community. Plus, television can also be Informative and educational, opening peoples eyes up to the world outside. Reality shows, for Instance, offer nothing of any worth to the audience. Yet people still tune in. People get hooked on shows which are poorly produced and concentrate mostly on issues of sex and violence. Although here is no conclusive evidence that watching violence on television makes children tofu people would become desensitizing to it, and that this could make it easier for children to engage in violent activities. Watching too much TV can lead to weight gain, poor social skills and lower academic results Unsupervised children spending too much of their time in front of a TV can have a big impact on their life. Obesity, lack of social skills and poor academic results are Just some of the effects TV have on children. Some psychologist believe that too such TV time can have a major effect in the psychology of the child. Children are suppose to interact and play, not sit and watch. Poor parenting and weight gain It is also evident that many people spend too much time watching television, so that parents dont bother to spend any time playing or talking with their children. It is far easier to stick them in front of the television, rather than taking them to the park. It cant be a coincidence that so many people are now overweight when they spend much more time watching television than they would have done years ago. People seed to be a lot more active, but now television is the most convenient way for individuals to keep themselves occupied. Thus, they burn hardly any calories while most probably consuming an excessive amount of calories. Its addictive Even though there are many negative aspects associated with watching television, many people enjoy television far too much to reduce the amount they watch or to avoid watching television altogether. People enjoy not having to think for themselves and to be able to sit down and watch something that helps them to relax, so why would they change?

Societys Restrictive Roles for Women Exposed in The Awakening Essay

In the late 1800's, as well as the early 1900's, women felt discriminated against by men and by society in general. Men generally held discriminatory and stereotypical views of women. Women had no control over themselves and were perceived to be nothing more than property to men. They were expected to live up to a perfect image that society had created, while trying to comply with their husbands' desires. While many women felt dissatisfied with their lives, they would not come out and say it. However, in 1899, Kate Chopin wrote The Awakening, which showed women that they were not alone. This novel showed the discriminatory views and treatment towards women. It also distinctly indicates the dissatisfaction that women felt in their lives. Because of the roles that society has given them, women are not able to seek and fulfill their own psychological and sexual drives. In The Awakening, Chopin uses Edna Pontellier to show that women do not want to be restricted by the roles th at society has placed on them. Because of the time she lived in, Edna felt oppressed just because she was a woman. Being a married woman and a mother made her feel even more tied down. By looking at the relationship between Edna and her husband, Leonce, we see that men treated women as if they were nothing more than possessions or property. They had no respect for their wives, mothers, or even their daughters as they constantly treated them like housemaids who were there to answer to their every call. Even Edna's father thinks that his daughter is her husband's property. We see this when he says "You are far too lenient, too lenient by far, Leonce. Authority, coercion are what is needed. Put your foot down good and hard; the only way to manage a wife" (Chopin 663). This is her own father telling her husband that he needs to be tougher on her. Chopin is clearly showing the inequality of women here. Nowadays, you would never find a father telling his son-in-law to be harder on his daughter. This was some thing that Edna would not accept. Chopin cleverly adds that it was this same treatment from her father that killed her mother. "The colonel was perhaps unaware he had coerced his own wife into her grave" (Chopin 663). "She would, through habit, have yielded to his desire; not with any sense of submission or obedience to his compelling wishes, but unthinki... ...lso, Chopin shows the effect that society can have on a woman. While some may be able to handle the pressure, others, such as Edna, cannot. This was evident by her suicide. "Consequently, this ending diminishes Edna's stature and perforce reduces the significance of her rebellion" (Conn 165). Although her suicide defeated the purpose of her awakening, which was to be free, Edna was still successful in showing that women do not want to be restricted by the roles that society has placed on them. Critical Summary of Conflicts as Property Essay

Introduction The article I will be critically summarizing is â€Å"Conflict as Property†. It is an influential article written by the criminologist Nils Christie in the late 1970s. Throughout the entire article Christie argues â€Å"criminology to some extent has amplified a process where conflicts have been taken away from the parties directly involved and thereby have either disappeared or become other peoples property†1 This statement is what I have found to be Christies thesis in which all of his points refer back to. Christies Argument Throughout the article Christie reflects on why he believes the conflict between two parties, the victim and defendant has been â€Å"stolen† by the authorities, the state, and by professionals. Christie said that not only does the victim loose his or her say in the proceedings but is relatively thrown out of the case in which it becomes between one party and the state. He found this unsatisfying and argued that it should be given back to the initial parties involved, the victim, the defendant and the neighborhood. He says when a conflict is created that we are less capable to take on the situation and are more likely to hand it off to some one else. This is where there is a lineup of professionals willing to take the conflict from us and we are just as willing to give it away. Christie explains his notion of â€Å"conflict as property† as not referring to material compensation but rather to the ownership of the conflict itself. He then recognizes the effects of victim losing the â€Å"property† initially and puts forth a method as a remedy for this process. He proposes a new court model for dealing with conflicts in which the court is victim centered and lay-oriented. My Opinion For most of the part I agree with what Christie has to say. I believe that throughout a proceeding it should be of most importance that the victim’s situation is to be heard whether it is relevant to the law or not. Instead of letting the state or professionals take over and say what they think has the most relevance to a case the court should hear the entire story from the victims point of view. This would show the courts to what affect this act by the offender has caused in the victims life. Also they should hear out what the victim seems fit as a fair punishment or payment in forms of restitution whether it is labour or monetary to go along with the judges sentence. I think that by having the initial parties involved instead of being pushed to the side, society will be more concerned to make sure that everyone is given a fair, equal, and consistent resolution to a conflict. It would ensure that the neighborhood and state have the same set of shared values and goals that the y are working towards to support social order. Most offenders after committing crimes do not want to see the victims or their families that they affected. It is an emotional encounter in the courtroom where the offender can show his remorse and the victim(s) can show pity I think that the two types of segmentation that are observed in our highly industrialized societies are the most important factors in why we don’t have the ability to deal with conflict. The segmentation in space is how we go through our daily lives and not recognizing any of the people we see as who they are but by what they do. Secondly we segregate people based on their physical attributes such as race, gender, and sex. This segregation has many consequences on society as a whole. The most influential consequence that we experience is depersonalization as Christie said. Not having this person-to-person relationship is detrimental, especially when conflicts arise seeing as how we can’t deal with them between the parties involved. We need professionals to step in and take the roles from us, which results in us being cast aside. Conclusion â€Å"Except for execution, castration or incarceration for life, no measure has a proven minimum of efficiency compared to any other measures†2 instead of continuing with the traditional way of a legal proceeding we need to change  things. People need to be able to interact face to face and have a more personal interaction. Conflicts must be given back to the initial parties and not â€Å"stolen† by these other powers. Is it not what somebody deserves? To have a case in which they are heard. Bibliography Nils Christie, â€Å"Conflict as Property† (1977) 17:4 The British Journal of Criminology Pg. 1-15

What Are CRFP Composites and Why Are They Useful

Carbon Fiber Reinforced Polymer Composites (CFRP) are lightweight, strong materials used in the manufacturing of numerous products used in our daily life. It is a term used to describe a fiber-reinforced composite material that uses carbon fiber as the primary structural component. It should be noted that the P in CFRP can also stand for plastic instead of polymer. In general, CFRP composites use thermosetting resins such as epoxy, polyester, or vinyl ester. Although thermoplastic resins are used in CFRP Composites, Carbon Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Composites often go by their own acronym, CFRTP composites. When working with composites or within the composites industry, it is important to understand the terms and acronyms. More importantly, it is necessary to understand the properties of FRP composites and capabilities of the various reinforcements such as carbon fiber. Properties of CFRP Composites Composite materials, reinforced with carbon fiber, are different than other FRP composites using traditional materials such as fiberglass or aramid fiber. The properties of CFRP composites that are advantageous include: Light Weight: A traditional fiberglass reinforced composite using continuous glass fiber with a fiber of 70% glass (weight of glass / total weight), will commonly have a density of .065 pounds per cubic inch. Meanwhile, a CFRP composite, with the same 70% fiber weight, might typically have a density of .055 pounds per cubic inch. Increased Strength: Not only are carbon fiber composites lighter weight, but CFRP composites are much stronger and stiffer per unit of weight. This is true when comparing carbon fiber composites to glass fiber, but even more so when compared to metals. For example, a decent rule of thumb when comparing steel to CFRP composites is that a carbon fiber structure of equal strength will often weigh 1/5th that of steel. You can imagine why automotive companies are investigating using carbon fiber instead of steel. When comparing CFRP composites to aluminum, one of the lightest metals used, a standard assumption is that an aluminum structure of equal strength would likely weigh 1.5 times that of the carbon fiber structure. Of course, there are many variables that could change this comparison. The grade and quality of materials can be different, and with composites, the manufacturing process, fiber architecture, and the quality need to be taken into account. Disadvantages of CFRP Composites Cost: Although amazing material, there is a reason why carbon fiber is not used in every single application. At the moment, CFRP composites are cost-prohibitive in many instances. Depending on the current market conditions (supply and demand), the type of carbon fiber (aerospace vs. commercial grade), and the fiber tow size, the price of carbon fiber can vary dramatically. Raw carbon fiber on a price-per-pound basis can be anywhere between 5-times to 25-times more expensive than fiberglass. This disparity is even greater when comparing steel to CFRP composites. Conductivity: This can be both an advantage to carbon fiber composites, or a disadvantage depending on the application. Carbon fiber is extremely conductive, while glass fiber is insulative. Many applications use glass fiber, and cannot use carbon fiber or metal, strictly because of the conductivity. For example, in the utility industry, many products are required to use glass fibers. It is also one of the reasons why ladders use glass fiber as the ladder rails. If a fiberglass ladder were to come in contact with a power line, the chances of electrocution are much lower. This would not be the case with a CFRP ladder. Although the cost of CFRP composites still remains high, new technological advancements in manufacturing are continuing to allow for more cost-effective products. Hopefully, in our lifetime, we will be able to see cost-effective carbon fiber used in a wide range of consumer, industrial, and automotive applications.
